UCHIKO – HOUSTON
Modern Farmhouse Meets Modern Houston Design
When Michael Hsu Office of Architecture set out to create Uchiko Houston—sister restaurant to Austin’s celebrated Uchi—they needed flooring that could anchor a design inspired by Japanese farmhouse tradition while meeting the demanding requirements of a high-end restaurant. Their choice of TerraMai Modern Classics Black Walnut became foundational to the project’s success, earning recognition with multiple design awards.
The Material Foundation
Spanning 3,115 square feet throughout the Post Oak district of Houston, TerraMai’s reclaimed Black Walnut establishes the warm, authentic atmosphere that defines the dining experience. Sourced from post-industrial manufacturing waste in the United States, the flooring embodies both environmental responsibility and exceptional craftsmanship.
The walnut flooring creates visual and tonal continuity throughout the restaurant’s carefully orchestrated material palette. Its warm tones complement the latticed wooden partition that frames the reception area—itself inspired by the irori or sunken heath of Japanese farmhouses. The flooring provides a textural counterpoint to cooler blues found in custom wallpaper installations, while harmonizing with leather and wood dining furniture and custom-designed concrete light fixtures.
This material relationship demonstrates how flooring functions as more than surface treatment—it becomes part of the spatial narrative, contributing to an atmosphere that feels both intimate and energetic. The natural sound-absorbing qualities of wood also contribute to the restaurant’s excellent acoustics, essential for the convivial dining experience.
Rich in tone and character, this FSC Mix 78%-certified walnut tells a story of American manufacturing heritage. Its zero-VOC oil finish allows the wood’s natural beauty—patina, grain, and all—to take center stage. Unlike new-growth lumber, reclaimed walnut brings visual depth and long-term durability, aging beautifully even in the high-traffic demands of a bustling restaurant.

Performance Meets Aesthetics
In the demanding environment of a busy restaurant, the engineered construction delivers stability and performance while maintaining the authentic appearance of solid wood. The zero-VOC finish provides protection without compromising indoor air quality—crucial for food service environments where health and safety are paramount.
The flooring’s ability to handle Houston’s subtropical climate while maintaining dimensional stability speaks to the quality of both material selection and manufacturing processes. After years of service, the floors continue to enhance rather than detract from the restaurant’s sophisticated atmosphere.
