Five tropical wood species, each beautiful and versatile in application, have arrived and are front-and-center in TerraMai’s Reclaimed Woods From Around the World. Tropical woods are valued for their looks, strength and durability but can come with a dark side. Many are illegally harvested, thus endangering the rainforest. TerraMai has an ecologically friendly alternative in which no living trees are cut; water reclaimed tropical woods.
Decades ago, Lake Bayano near the Panama Canal was created submerging a massive standing tropical forest. Beneath the surface of this manmade lake, lie millions of board feet of gorgeous tropical woods. Because of the oxygen poor environment of fresh water, the wood has been perfectly preserved. TerraMai is working with partners to reclaim the especially large and high quality tropical woods from beneath the water’s surface, thus bringing life to this lost resource.
