TerraMai gives new life to old wood and in the process helps preserve old-growth forests and combat global warming.

TerraMai was founded on a commitment to environmental conservation in 1991 (originally as Jefferson Recycled Woodworks). Since then, the company has reclaimed more than a million board feet of wood material.

Much of this wood was otherwise destined for landfills and burn piles throughout the United States and abroad.

By reclaiming old-growth woods, especially old-growth tropical woods, we offset the demand for new lumber. Both the harvest of the world’s forests - especially tropical forests - and the burning of discarded wood, contribute to global warming.

Reclaimed, old-growth wood has a number of design and construction advantages over new wood:

Beauty – dense grain, all-heart, old-growth reclaimed wood possesses a luster and refinement not available in most new lumber.

Character – nail holes, bolt holes, natural weathering all give reclaimed wood a visual richness and sense of history not available in new wood.

Stability & Durability – because it was harvested and milled decades ago, reclaimed wood offers a stability unavailable in new, even kiln-dried, wood. Because it is dense-grain, old-growth material, reclaimed wood is harder and more durable than most new lumber.

The environmental advantages of reclaimed wood, combined with all the structural and aesthetic advantages, make it a unique and precious resource. TerraMai is dedicated to promoting and preserving this resource, helping our planet in the process.
