rare & unusual » redwood doors/table tops

Product Description: For these giant, 8’ redwood doors, their history is as dramatic as their beauty. We reclaimed these doors from the San Francisco headquarters of the legendary, now infamous, Pacific Lumber Company (PALCO).

Founded in 1863 on the north coast of California, PALCO is the largest redwood lumber company in the world. It was instrumental in the rebuilding of San Francisco following the 1906 earthquake and at its peak was producing more than 20 million board feet of redwood lumber annually.

The company became an early pioneer of ‘sustainable’ forestry. Former PALCO holdings now make up Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the world’s largest remaining contiguous old-growth redwood forest. The company also introduced the world’s first Presto logs made from recycled sawdust.

In recent decades, PALCO has been dogged by controversy and legal battles. These began in 1986 with the hostile takeover of the company by Charles Hurwitz and his Texas-based Maxxam, Inc. The sustainable practices PALCO pioneered went by the wayside under Maxxam’s management and the company became a prime target for conservationists.

The most famous conflict between PALCO and environmental activists was Julia Butterfly Hill’s two-year protest perched high in a 600 year-old redwood tree, named Luna. Hurwitz and Maxxam eventually agreed to Hill’s demands to spare the tree and a 3-acre buffer zone from cutting.

The company is now in the midst of a complex and contentious bankruptcy battle that will determine the fate of hundreds of square miles of redwood forest.

It is this bankruptcy that forced the recent closing of PALCO’s San Francisco headquarters and made these phenomenal redwood doors available for reclamation by TerraMai.

These solid doors are made from premium old-growth redwood with solid brass hardware. They are also ideal for use as table tops, desk tops and other applications that call for a large, gorgeous surface area.

Regardless of their application, these doors are one-of-a-kind showpieces with one-of-a-kind history.
