TerraMai was founded on a commitment to conservation in 1991. Since then, the company has repurposed millions of board feet of salvaged wood.
TerraMai works exclusively with reclaimed wood. We work directly with sources we know and trust.
All TerraMai woods are certified ‘recycled’ according to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC C021798). TerraMai was the world's first reclaimed wood company to have all of its products FSC certified recycled.
Some of TerraMai’s reclaimed woods are applied to substrates made of FSC-certified new wood to create engineered wood products such as engineered flooring and veneer panels.
By reclaiming old wood, especially old-growth tropical hardwoods, TerraMai helps offset the demand for new lumber. The use of reclaimed wood helps preserve the world's remaining forests. It also offsets emissions associated with the logging, transportation, processing and milling of new wood.
The reclamation of old wood also helps divert millions of tons of wood from the world’s waste streams, landfills and burn piles.
The environmental advantages of reclaimed wood, combined with the structural and aesthetic advantages, make it a unique and precious resource. TerraMai is dedicated to promoting and preserving this resource.
Advantages of Reclaimed Wood
Beauty – dense grain, all-heart, old-growth reclaimed wood possesses a luster and refinement not available in most new lumber.
History & Character – nail holes, bolt holes, weathering and other character enhances the natural beauty of wood. It also offers visual testimony of the wood's unique history. These qualities are not available with new wood.
Stability & Durability – because it was harvested and milled decades ago, reclaimed wood offers a stability unavailable in new, even kiln-dried, wood. Because it is mostly dense-grain, old-growth material, reclaimed wood is harder and more durable than new lumber.
Sustainability – as outlined above, reclaimed wood offers a wide range of sustainability advantages over new wood.
Sourcing, Milling & Shipping
TerraMai only purchases wood from structures slated for demolition, whether in the U.S or abroad. Whenever possible, the woods we reclaim are remilled as close to the source as possible, both domestically and overseas.
TerraMai continues to develop a network of sources, mills and shops throughout the U.S. and abroad. This network is unmatched in the reclaimed wood industry.
This network allows TerraMai to reduce shipping and to supply LEED-eligible regional wood products to all parts of the U.S. This practice also allows TerraMai to take advantage of local and regional knowledge and expertise and to support local communities both in the U.S. and overseas.
We only work with overseas operations that meet our high standards for workplace conditions and technical excellence. We personally, and repeatedly, visit every facility we work with overseas.
All TerraMai woods are certified recycled by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the world’s premiere forest conservation organization (FSC C021798).
TerraMai’s FSC certification assures clients that our products are authentically reclaimed.
Our FSC certification also helps clients interested in acquiring Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
All TerraMai products can help a project earn points toward credits in several LEED categories. Which credits, specifically, depends on the product and the project.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program is a nationally recognized rating system for sustainable building.
The program is created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and administered by Green Building Certificate Institute (GBCI). TerraMai has been a USGBC member since 2003.
All TerraMai solid-wood products can earn points toward Recycled Content credits. All TerraMai’s engineered products can also earn points toward Recycled Content credits, as well as Certified Wood credits and Low-Emitting Materials credits.
TerraMai can also help earn points toward Regional Materials credits. Through its unique sourcing and partner mill network, TerraMai can provide reclaimed wood products within 500 miles of virtually anywhere in the U.S.
See the LEED section of this Website to learn more. Or contact a TerraMai account manager. TerraMai has several LEED APs on staff that can help answer questions and offer guidance around the program.
