projects » U.S. Green Building Council Headquarters, Washington, D.C.

It’s a holy shrine of green building, with interiors graced by reclaimed Douglas fir beams from TerraMai.

As the arbiter of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program – the nationally accepted rating system for green building – it was critical the new headquarters for the U.S. Green Building Council meet the strictest environmental standards. Vital to this effort was the use of green materials, such as reclaimed wood.

In addition to their eco-friendly advantages, the TerraMai Douglas fir beams used in the project also add character, history and warmth to this state-of-the-art project, designed by the Perkins & Will office in Washington, D.C.

Reclaimed from the old Geneva Steel mill near Orem, Utah, these enormous beams have a long and special history. For more information on the Geneva Steel inventory, and the historic mill they came from, click here.
