TerraMai co-founder and president Richard McFarland was in Washington D.C. recently to testify before a senate subcommittee examining issues related to bottled water.

McFarland spoke specifically about a proposed Nestle bottling plant near McCloud, CA. The town, located at the base of Mt. Shasta in far Northern California, is also home to TerraMai.

The Nestle plant is a bad deal for both the environment and for local residents, asserts McFarland, who is among the leaders of a grass-roots coalition working to block the proposed plant.

McFarland’s leadership in this effort is consistent with TerraMai’s corporate leadership in sustainable wood products. TerraMai was founded on a commitment to conservation in 1991 (originally as Jefferson Recycled Woodworks). This ethic remains a core principal of the company.

In addition to locking up millions of gallons or pristine spring water at the base of Mt. Shasta for what some say is a fraction of their real worth, the proposed Nestle plant would also bring hundreds of daily truck trips in and out of the plant, along with noise and pollution, to a serene landscape renowned for its beauty and abundant plant and animal wildlife.
